It became entrenched in the culture, not that it was following the spirit of the contract. I hate when people say things like this. Unions don’t stop anyone from getting fired for being lazy or for malfeasance, they just make it so management has to show that that is the case. If supervisors actually did their job and did things like warning and coach bad behavior, then they’d be able to fire these people.

The company hires the workers so if they’re making bad hires, that’s on them. I’m a crazy truck driver beautiful daughter vintage car shirt. A union represents those workers and tries to get them/us a living wage. Good benefits, and maybe even a pension (god, I miss being a Teamster)! It takes a while, sure. But that happens even in a well-run non-union place. Union member 25 years/ three locals. And the New York local still feels like it’s a 1978 protectionist mentality. West coast local fortunately is more about professional development and personal education. I’m still pro-union but I understand I’m sacrificing a bit of my mobility for the collective. Where power exists, so does corruption and politics.
